Peter Nixey
Iplex Pipelines

This paper describes construction and acceptance criteria for buried flexible pipelines to provide background to material which is being considered for inclusion in the as yet unpublished Standard AS/NZS 2566 "Buried flexible pipelines; Part 2: Installation". Together with the previously published AS/NZS 2566; "Part 1 Structural Design" and its Supplement, these documents will cover the design and installation of all buried flexible pipelines of 75 mm diameter or larger, manufactured from commonly used materials including products as diverse as polyethylene and steel. While the new standardised design process of Part 1 has been a useful means of directing the attention of designers and specifiers to the fundamental design parameters required of these pipes, the quality of the installation and acceptance testing remain the most significant factors in determining the long term performance of buried pipelines.
